Baggage insurance is available for both international and domestic flights although the replacement and cost for lost items vary. If you are having a hard time choosing one, here are some tips on how to shop for this type of cover.
First of all, contact your existing insurance carrier. Check out what is included in your own contract and whether you still need to buy an additional coverage for missing bags. If your existing plan already covers the latter, ask them what are included in it. If they offer you a policy, ask them to give you a quote.
Second, do not hesitate to discuss the details with your agent, especially when some things are not clear to you. Ask about the restrictions, the proof needed, and how long it would take for you to get your money claim. Ask if it covers carry-on bags. Also, determine if you could quickly and easily use the plan when you are stuck in some foreign country without your belongings.
Third, once you have an estimate of how much a particular policy would cost, you can now decide on what to buy, or whether you should buy in the first place. Just remember to find out everything there is to know before you make a decision.
Finally, if you did not have enough time to shop around for a lost baggage insurance, getting one at the airport may be your last resort. However, take note that they are often extremely inflated. Aside from that, rushing and making last-minute decisions may not provide the protection you really need. So before you travel, be prepared by planning ahead.
