Safety Tips for Shopping in a Foreign Country

To truly enjoy shopping at your holiday destination, you need to have a plan even before you step on that plane. At least a week before your trip, research on the Web about the best shopping spots in the country you will be visiting. If you have friends who have already been to that place, you can ask them about their shopping experiences. If the country you will be visiting speaks a foreign language and practises a different culture, you should know at least a few basic phrases (such as “ how much?” or “thank you”) in their native language. You should also make an effort to learn a few things about their culture – especially behaviour that they might find offensive. Doing so will help prevent embarrassing social situations.

If you will be shopping in an open area with crowds of people, such as in an outdoor market, be extra careful with your possessions and your money. Foreigners are usually the favourite targets of thieves. Always keep a close eye on your belongings, especially if you will be taking along expensive gadgets such as a digital camera. Keep extra money in your pockets so that in the event that your wallet gets lost or stolen, you will still have some cash to use. Finally, if you have a friend who lives in or is familiar with the country you will be travelling to, ask them if he or she could accompany you on your shopping trip. In this way, you can have someone to serve as your guide and companion.
